Inspired by a recent “getting to know you” thread on the Pandas Unlimited forum. As a result of a massive flood of childhood memories from answering some questions on that forum …I would love to share with you my favorite childhood Xmas gift and hope you share yours in the comments section too!!
This is Gaylord the Walking Basset Hound!
QUESTION: Favourite gift received as a child?
A mechanical dog that walked in the early 60’s. It looked like a full sized basset hound puppy. I was about 5. I remember his name was “Gaylord the walking basset hound” by Ideal toys
OMG.. I just found him online..I am getting my Gaylord back!!
I remember watching this commercial and pretending I was Gaylord. My parents couldn’t get me up off of all 4’s for days. I barked instead of talking and mom can laugh about it now but they were really worried about me…lol! I wanted that toy sooooooooooo bad
Check out the old commercial..priceless and what a memory jogger!
Now I would LOVE to hear about your most memorable gifts recieved and I will research any I can and post links to them here too! This should be fun to see what made you all tick as kids!!
My Gosh..Does that ever bring me back. Gaylord was the only thing you would look at that Xmas. You barked and acted like it.You had him for years
That is just FAR too cute for its own good Sandy! I can see why you tried so hard to have him for Christmas! 🙂 🙂 I’m trying to think of my most memorable gift. I honestly can’t think of *one* that I got as a child, but I remember one Christmas that the entire wall of the dining room was COVERED in presents for me (I think I was like 8 or 9) and it was from ALL of my family. I think my eyes bugged out of my head and I nearly exploded with glee. I think there was ONE big present (a stereo for my room) and the rest were all little trinkets and stuff in big boxes, but I was in heaven! 🙂
He is adorable!! I know my favorite gift as a child was the diamond earrings I received when I was 10, followed by the rabbit fur jacket the next year. Crazy things to be my favorite, but the earrings were such a surprise, I never imagined in my wildest dreams I would ever have a pair. They were beautiful 1/2 ctw. studs, not too big, but big enough to sparkle. Unfortunatly years later we had someone break into our house and they stole one. I was able to have the other one added to a pendant I wanted re-designed, so at least I still get to enjoy it. Now I want one of those Gaylords!!
Sandy, That is TOO sweet! My favorite Christmas toy was a Wonder Horse. In 1971 I got a ride on, spring operated, Palomino horse that had wheels on each hoof. You would bounce up and down in his saddle and it would propel him all around the house. I LOVED that horse. I had him until last year, when I discovered a huge fissure running down his neck. 36 years!!!
I was raised in Alaska. And wanted ice skates very badly for Christmas. Christmas arrived and I received those beautiful white skate but the weather was sunny and no snow or ice. Clearly I was disappointed so my father got two boxes and filled them with ice cubes and I skated all over the house in the ice cube boxes. I am 77 now and still remember the joy of that Christmas
OMG! I remember Gaylord, but my most memorable Christmas gift was my very first typewriter. I asked my dad for a typewriter. It was all I wanted at age 12 I pictured it in my mind all shiny and brand new and me punching the keys so fast all my thoughts would come tumbling out at once. Christmas morning came and I saw my big present — wrapped under a white bed sheet, because it couldn’t be wrapped any other way. I uncovered it and found an old fashioned typewriter that had the keys propped up on “legs” that you had to push real hard. It wasn’t fast at all…but, I realized that my Dad really tried hard to give me a present that I really wanted, and that was my Best Christmas Ever!
WELL-L-L-L-L-L-L-L, when I was about 5yrs old, all I could talk about was getting a kitten….my dad thought it was really neat when he brought a little black cocker spaniel puppy home for ‘the family’! I liked that little dog/ it was our very first pet, BUT I still asked for a kitten. Imagine my surprise when I got my wish and not 1 but 2 little bundles of fur—1 was a blue tabby girl I named Muffin and the other a BROWN TABBY boy that I called Tuffy. They lived what was considered a long time back then-all of 9yrs-going outside/ never had any vaccinations/ not spayed or neutered. I remember Muffin coming home dragging a rear leg-someone had used her for target practice and I nursed her for days behind the wood stove. She recovered, but always had a limp. Maybe that was the beginning of my wish to be an ‘animal doctor’! I have been in the animal care field for 28 years now. I loved them so much and to this day I have never been without a Brown Tabby cat. It has been many years of one of my favorite animals.
This was sooo cute! Gaylord would be popular even today. He is so precious! Thanks for sharing him.
I never thought much about it but to be totally honest, I was raised by a single Mom that baely spoke english abandonned in this country after she was brought here by my Dad. My Mom did what she could and that was it, that is my memory. I got the best my mom could give me, monetarilly not much at all but I always knew she loved me. I had my Mom that was all that mettered
We didn’t have much those days and I liked watching the stupid little gifts I gave my parents when they opened them and acted so suprised and happyl If I try to choose one I got it has to be the Christmas I got a Barbie Doll. Just the doll no outfits, my parents chould barely afford the doll, so I made clothes for her out of material my Mom had. Boy, you should see those clothes. That was the only gift I got that year, but it was the best, I still have that doll.
You guys!!! This is so wonderful to hear your stories about your favorite presents. I had a tear in my eye when I read each one…each so touching and from the heart. I have so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving to have friends like you all!!!
Much much much appreciation for sharing your personal stories. I hope more add to the comments here as well
I can think of so many things from different ages. My first real Barbie, the “Golden Dreams Barbie” I wanted to be her! My first stereo, my first “real” jewelry. I loved my friend Diana’s post. It is so fitting for her, really made me smile!
