Quoting from ANIMALS ASIA‘s founder Jill Robinson in her call for votes back in June

I’m sure you’ve heard of Africa’s Big 5 – the lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Now Asian Geographic magazine is running “Asia’s Big 5 Contest” to recognise five animals that are unique to Asia. The Asia Geo team has already chosen the panda, the tiger and the orangutan. They are giving us the chance to choose Asia’s remaining two iconic animals! (NOTE: voting is now over…see below )

The Asiatic black bear or Moonbear, is often lowly regarded in Asia as an animal that is solely important for its bile. Of course, we know otherwise! The antics of the playful bears that have been rescued never fail to bring a smile to our faces. Despite the unimaginable horrors they have been through on the bile farms, these forgiving creatures are determined to put the past behind them and to be proud ambassadors for their species.

Well here is the email I received from Jill today.  I cried so hard when I saw this incredible news!!!

Dear Sandra,    We did it! The Asiatic black bear (moon bear) is now officially one of Asia’s Big 5! A huge thank you to all of you who voted for the moon bear in Asian Geographic magazine’s „Asia’s Big 5 Contest‰.
The readers’ poll also chose the elephant to join the three iconic animals that Asian Geo had already included in the Big 5 – the tiger, orangutan and giant panda.

Of course, we already knew that the moon bear was special – now the rest of the world will as well. We’ll certainly spread this news far and wide and use the moon bears’ new status as another „weapon‰ in our struggle to end the shocking abuse of this intelligent, forgiving and highly endangered species.

Bear hugs,

Jill

I dont’ have an orangatan photo unfortunately but here is one more of my favorite Moonbear in Thailand called “Bam Bam”.  She was such a character and spoiled rotten by her keepers.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PLANET EARTH FOR THE CHANCE TO KEEP THESE CREATURES SAFE AND PLENTIFUL!
