Wild painted dog in Botswana..stunning creature
There aren’t very many of these beautiful dogs left in the wild. Each is marked uniquely. They are on the critically endangered species list with only 5000 remaining in the wild according to National Geographic.

Hmmm don't want to burst anyone's bubble but the latest figures I've got is that there are only between 2000 - 2500 of these puppies left in the world! Here in Kruger we only have approximately 125 - 150 left! Apparently Selous and Moremi are the reserves to really go to if you want to definitely see them!

Thanks for the update on that total. I took the number from what they told us at the dewildt breeding center which was also mentioned in the national geographic article.
We saw wild dogs in botswana by the nxabega camp and then the ones in the captive breeding program at dewildt and the lion and rhino park outside of j'burg.
It just sickens me to see these animals disappearing. What a sight to be able to witness them feeding and the social behavior. To me they are more interesting than meercats because of my background as a dog breeder. The pack behavior just blows me away
