Hi Sandra, here in South Africa each and every productive banana tree is actually chopped right off after bearing it's fruit.
The method works as such: Mother tree = tree bearing fruit this year, Grand mother = stump from previous year and Daughter tree = young shoot growing at the foot of the mother tree to bear fruit next year!
Phew! And there is a whole lesson for you on banana trees and their crops!
